About World Gin Week

World Gin Week is the brainchild of two Irishmen: Karl Finegan, owner of The Ivory Peacock bar in Manhattan, boasting the world’s 2nd largest collection of gin, and spirits authority, gin brand creator and Gin Guild member Philip Duff. World Gin Week bridges World Gin Day, held on the second Saturday in June and created in 2009 in Birmingham (UK) by Neil Houston, a gin enthusiast, and taken over in 2013 by Neil’s friend Emma Stokes, and World Martini Day, held on the third Saturday of June and created by Belvedere Vodka in 2012 as part of a marketing campaign.

Philip

“Simply put, we felt that gin deserved a whole week, given the tremendous rise in its popularity due to the tireless efforts of the whole gin community, including World Gin Day, and the continued flourishing of the Second Golden Age of Cocktails, which began in 1994 in London and is going strong all around the world to this day. Gin has been mixed since its creation and we’re delighted to encourage consumers, bars and brands everywhere to join us in the promotion of gin and gin cocktails.”

Karl

Karl Finegan: “The cocktail was invented in New York, first mentioned in print in New York, and the martini was invented in New York (probably), so as well as cheerleading gin menus and events everywhere, we wanted to organize tastings, seminars and pop-up bars here in New York. We hope that with the fullness of time, many bars around New York, across America and around the world will all offer World Gin Week gin cocktails, gin menus, gin tasting flights, gin dinners and all manner of gin fun, during World Gin Week.”
